Needing some advise on how to tell if sun spots or age spots aren't a new melanoma.

I would only trust dermoscopy, not the naked eye. My last melanoma (number three of three) was first mistaken for age-related changes – it was a faint wash of brown shading with a dark freckle on top. Due to time constraints, my doc first biopsied just the dark freckle, which came back dysplastic but with a recommendation of proper excision as it was clear it was not a complete biopsy. The final 2mm excision of the very faint brown patch came back as stage 1 melanoma, Breslow 0.15mm. It looked for all the world like an age spot – very faint brown, not dark at all.
