I have asked a few doctors and so far havent gotten any advice. My husband started Keytruda and will be on it for “as long as it works.” There is zero information available as to whether it will affect having a child. Is it even something to worry about?I know this is a tough question. All I’m looking for is some advice.

Hi – I don't have the answer for you, perhaps its really too early to tell with these new-wave drugs. On Mercks patient disclosure thing it says:
Embryofetal toxicity: KEYTRUDA can cause fetal harm. Advise females of reproductive potential of the potential risk to a fetus.(5.8)
Which kind of assumes its the woman/mother taking Keytruda – and it only mentions harm in this case (link:
https://www.merck.com/product/usa/pi_circulars/k/keytruda/keytruda_pi.pdf
Perhaps contact Merck direct and ask? You might find its no issue for a male taking Keytruda, then you guys can start looking at your family plans. All the best,

I'm not sure about keytruda, but I have a male friend who is on the nivo/ipi trial and he had been told not to have sex with his wife. I think it is out of abundant caution. They-are retired and certainly finished their family. But he said the doctors just don't know what may possibly passed to the partner.

I was told by my Dr to use protection and not get anyone pregnant. I am on Yervoy and Opdivo. You need to sit down with your Dr and ask these questions. If you really need to get pregnant, I bet your Dr will take you off the drug and you will need to wait 6 months before it is safe to get pregnant. You need to way out your health condition over getting pregnant.

I heard some guys had the foresight to do the sperm bank thing before starting keytruda or the other treatments. I didn't. Otherwise the docs say 6 months without treatment then can have a family. Otherwise they really don't know what affect will be on the child. Too new and not enough studies. Basically they are trying to just keep us alive. In my opinion the affect on the child could be anything. Severe immune disorder the child doesn't last a week to totally healthy for a 100 years. No one really knows.
