Hello everybody. I just made this account in hopes of getting some advice. I am a 22 year old woman, recently, I noticed a rash-like spot close to my collarbones. I noticed this about 3 days ago when I came home from work and took my shirt off. I was scratching my chest and neck area and suddenly it hurt on a certain spot. That’s when I saw this very reddish spot. I thought I has scratched a pimple but soon noticed that it wasn’t a pimple and it looked sort of like a rash. I let it be. Next day I look at it and it is now more of a pink color and it seemed to be a bit bigger. It feels rough to the touch and it doesn’t itch anymore. It also appears to be a bit elevated than the rest of my skin. Today it seemed to have enlarged a bit more. It has a different color on the center and pink on the edges. I will post a picture so you guys can see what I am talking about and whether I should be worried or not. I googled up the symptoms and all I got was skin cancer results…I am really scared. I also have a trip from the 29th this month unt july 13th and all the dermatologists and surgeons I have tried to contact don’t have any space before that time. :'(

The pictures with the blue jacket and the close-up where you can see part of the chain of my necklace were yesterday. And the one that you can only see the skin is from today. Does this look like anytype of skin cancer? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

          Hi Jess,

i know this stuff is stressful, but it isn't typical for a lesion to pop up in a three day period that turns out to be melanoma.  There are hundreds of other potential causes like allergies, contact dermatitis, insect bite, etc.  seeing the dermatologist is a good idea, if for nothing else, to bring you peace of mind.  I wouldn't worry too much about the wait time.   Hang in there until you see the doc and give us an update.  Good luck!

Hello. Thank you for your reply! I am not 100% sure if it appeared 3 days ago or a bit more, because it is not in an area that can be unnoticed. I literally see my chest/neck area everyday and it wasn’t there at least no more than a week I would say (if I somehow missed it and/or it was smaller before). But it is very weird because I have never had any rash or irritation that looks this way. I have called many dermatologists but only one has been able to take my call and give me an appointment for August 2. 🙁 Very long time to wait if this doesn’t go away and keeps changing or getting bigger.

Fear is not knowing and knowledge is power!  Can you get an appointment with your regular doc and use their office to get you an expidited appiontment to a dermatologist?  I know its summer and vacations have started, but waiting 6 weeks is unacceptable.

                Be persistent!

Thank you for your reply. I will have to go to my primary dr and see if I can get a referral to a dermatologist as soon as possible. This is freaking me out honestly. And I can’t seem to focus on anything but this mark.

I would be persistent with the DR and call daily or weekly to see if they have any cancellations that you can get in.  Let them know that you are very concerned.  Keep track of any changes in this and also keep track of the lotions, soaps, and perfumes that you are using in that area.  Some of those things or combination of things can cause irritation.  Try not to stress out too much about it because stress can make your reaction worse.  Have you talked to your primary physician yet?  They may be able to refer you to a dermatologist and get you in sooner.  (just a thought)  From your description it does not sound like a melanoma, however, it could be something that needs to be looked at like a SCC or a BCC since it is pink and raw.  I will hope for your sake that it is contact dermatitis and you can walk away from this with less stress.

I hope all turns out well for you.

Hello, thanks for the reply. I haven’t used any lotions or soaps that could be the cause of this mark. I have kept my regime the same. Also, could you please tell me what SCC or BCCA stands for? I apologize for my ignorance on this matter. I am very worried still, haven’t had any luck calling different dermatologists. I will have to go to my primary dr to see if she can give me a referral and I can go to the derma sooner. Waiting until August is just too much!

Nevermind I looked it up and finally got results…the SCC looks even scarier! I for one am not a person who likes being exposed to the sun because I really don’t like it. So I always cover up as much as I can. However, that particular area does tend to catch more sun because it is close to my collarbones and that part usually is uncovered. 🙁 I don’t know what to think but I need to hurry this up and get it checked asap!

Jess, I'm not a doctor, but I honestly don't think this is any type of cancerous lesion.  It almost has the appearance of ringworm to me.  I believe your primary care doctor could take a look at this and at least ease your mind.  When you called the dermatoogists' offices, did you tell them that you had a suspicious lesion?  Sometimes they keep appointments available for just these circumstances.

Hey, thank you for replying. I seriously hope it is not a big deal and that it goes away soon. I am using my boyfriend’s psoriasis cream betamethasone dipropionate. He said it could help if it was nothing serious and make it go away. I looked it up and it said it can be used for many different skin issues. So I hope that it helps in any case.

Another thing that came to my mind is IBC since I’ve had 3 ultrasounds already and the last one was an axilliary ultrasound where they found 2 swollen lymphnodes but said they looked normal. They also detected another lymphnode on the tail of the right breast but that one is not palpable. The 2 swollen lymphnodes are under my right armpit, and I noticed one of them is growing more. This mark is also on my right side. I also have cysts on both breasts and two lesions. They all came back normal though according to the dr. This is all the results that I have had during a year and a half of follow-ups, and now this mark. Anyway…I think I am driving myself crazy thinking the worst. Hopefully I am overreacting. I will try to go to my primary dr this friday and hopefully she will give me a referral to the derma. I also have another ultrasound follow-up this Saturday. Wishing it comes back fine!

It definitely looks like ringworm to me…you can buy something over the counter like Lotrimin, but for your own peace of mind, go to urgent care.

Thank you for your reply! I will go this Friday. I am busy this whole week so that’s the only day I can go. I wanted to say more spots have appeared. One on my biceps have expanded and two tiny ones have appeared on top of the original one.

Ringworm can also spread to different parts like this.

I agree, it looks like ringworm to me as well. Going to your primary care would be good and put your mind at ease.

Thank you. I hope it is anything else but any type of cancer. I have family history of various types of cancer including breast cancer. That’s why I get really nervous whenever I find a new lump or something feels different with my breasts or any part of my body like these red patches. I will hopefully check on friday and then give an update! Just hoping these spots don’t keep growing!

Multiple red patches do not equal cancer. No need to cause yourself such anxiety.
