It's not clear to me – has it been biopsied and found abnormal yet? If not, you have zero worries as you just won't know the result until that is done and there is a very high chance things are perfectly fine. If it has already been biopsied and found 'abnormal' I also wouldn't be too worried until I found out what 'abnormal' means – it could just mean a dysplastic mole which needs some more skin removed, or a minor skin cancer like BCC. Either way, your current worry is quite pointless – sorry to sound harsh, but it's true. It's way over the top for someone in your situaiton. Do you suffer health anxiety? Because to go from having a funny looking mole to thinking you are riddled with cancer is faulty thinking. There's no facts to support it, you are worrying needlessly. The ony time to worry about melanoma is when you have formally been diagnosed with melanoma, in my view. Right now, you are the worried well.

Just saw your post and no usually I don’t suffer health anxiety. I’m too much the other way which is why I haven’t been checking moles…in too long. But since dec I’ve been suffering lots of unusual symptoms ..fatigue,losing weight, headaches, weak arms, tingly fingers, dizziness, painful neck, swollen lymph nodes, etc this was unusual for me because i HAvent had lots of health trouble and this all came on in dec. I’ve been to docs many times and they say they don’t know or I’m fine.they also said mole was keratosis and fine that it changed color and size and became painful. But when I finally saw dermatologist he said it looked bad and now I been told I have abnormal biopsy and yes now I have health anxiety. It has been a real frustrating 3 plus months. And when I was told by nurse you have abnormal biopsy you need to come in tomorrow I’m sorry it seemed pretty clear. I don’t think if it is just atypical mole they’d care if I came in a couple days later. I’m sorry to bother everyone but this has scared me and i don’t know where to turn for support.

I think from your prior post that you would be getting your results tomorrow…you have two choices – don’t go and prolong the waiting, or go and get the results.  As previous poster mentioned, it could be lots of things besides melanoma, but in the event it is, you are best to find out and get treatment lined up.  My experience is that finding out and being able to get a game plan (sense of control) together relieves anxiety.  You might need some support in this area too, many people do.

              Take care

if it turns out not to be melanoma ill stop posting here but since it was a mole that became painful and changed color i assume most of the time thats melanoma when biopsy results are abnormal.

Actually, that's not true.  There is the category of "atypical" or "dysplastic" nevi.  They are not cancer.  However, depending on the degree of atypia, additional margins may be required as a precaution.  Many of us have had extra excisions for atypical moles.  It could very easily be this and NOT melanoma.  Again, don't jump to conclusions.

My biopsy came back abnormal….or can it be the same thing atypical moles bring back abnormal biopsy? I’m trying to learn about this but I still have a lot to learn. When she said she’s sorry to tell me biopsy was abnormal I took that to mean cancer. I will get all the news tomorrow they don’t usually give this news over the phone here. Only reason she told me was because I was going to postpone appointment and she said I need to come in tomorrow.

To me, the wording "abnormal" sounds more like atypical.  I've never heard the word abnormal biopsy (and I've been around this site over 15 years).  If it was melanoma, she would have said cancer or melanoma – at least in my book.  Atypical or dysplastic moles ARE abnormal.  They are not considered benign but they are not considered cancer either.  They fall in between.  Think of it on a scale.  0 is benign.  10 is in situ melanoma.  What if the mole had some features that were not totally normal, but most were.  That might rate about 3 on our scale.  Other lesions might have more atypical features – but still not enough to be considered cancerous.  Maybe a 7.  They don't score melanoma this way, but they do look at a variety of factors to determine whether or not a lesion is cancerous.  And there are lesions that fall in between.  Many times these lesions are labeled mild, moderate or severely atypical (dysplastic).  The more atypical the lesion, the more concerning.  Severely atypical lesions are usually removed with an extra 5mm margins, just as a precaution.  Moderately atypical lesions may have conservative margins.  So there are definitely reasons she could be calling you back in, but that doesn't mean it has to be melanoma.  Additional surgery might be needed to get better margins for even a non-cancerous lesion.  Again, don't presume.  I would, however, get a copy of your pathology report so you know exactly what was found.

ONE thing I haven’t mentioned in all of this is that I live in Quebec Canada, so maybe terminology they use is different. I’m in Montreal now and will soon get the report from the doctor.
