The people on this forum are pretty open about most emotions. We talk about our fear, anxiety, frustration, elation, and stress. But I never hear anybody talk about depression. I, personally, didn't talk about it because with so much to do and so much to think about, I wasn't depressed. Or so I thought!

I just posted about depression on the Off-Topic forum. I suspect that we all– patients and caregivers– would be wise to recognize and deal with that emotion. It's effects can be very corrosive.

I've lived with depression for the last 17 years (pre-Mel).  It's a difficult thing to control.  I've tried various natural methods:  bio-feedback, talk therapy, etc.  Finally ended up on drugs.  Still have a bit of break through problems but managing.  It terrible when it hits you like a ton of rocks or if someone looks at you a certain way you start crying.  Totally not in control of your body/emotions.  But there can be medical reasons for this and there are treatments, don't suffer.  Deal with it as you would a physical pain.

                Take care of yourself,

                Mary

I’ve lived with depression most of my adult life.
Amy, you’ve described the feeling so aptly.
When I had my phone consult for acupuncture today, the woman mentioned that it can be helpful for depression. I’ll let you know.
                      Take care,

I am sure that what you are experiencing is So SO common. I was thinking that for so long you were busy and hard at tracking down every resource and possible treatment for your brother and you were in high gear. Now that things are not requiring that type of high level advocacy and intervention, you probably would very naturally experience this emotional downturn. I am glad you have sought counsel and support and glad you are taking the time out needed for your own emotional well-being. No doubt, you cannot be absolutley fine under the circumstances. No one would be… but at least you can have help to keep your footing. I dont know you, obviously, but I know you are one remarkable lady with every post of yours I have read. And… as the giving person you are, you have taken time to alert those of us on this board to this other giant that could have detrimental affects on any one of us at a given time. It is a good thing to be aware of before it gets a giant foothold.I also know from watching my own dear husband respond to the years of melanoma ups and downs that the life of a caregiver is a very difficult road and one that few outsiders seem to understand, and one that even I, as his closest friend, cannot fully enter in to.

Thank you for posting, and you and your brother remain in my prayers,

                          Tina

Due in large part to the warmth, caring, and excellent suggestions I received from those of you here an on the Off-Topic forum, I can feel my depression lifting. It's not gone yet, of course, but I am feeling better and I am getting more things done because I am cutting myself a lot of slack. If you are interested, you can read more on the Off-Topic forum.

Thanks to you all for your most excellent help!
