Hello
i follow the forum daily. I am a parent of a stage 3c patient. After two lymph nodes resection surgery my son was diagnosed as NED. He is participating in a trial and had so far two infusions of ipilimulab 3mg/kg.
The trial involves, among other tests, a CT scan every 3 months. I just wonder if not having any tumor to compare to why it is necessary to expose him to frequent radiation. I wonder if anyone has experienced a different diagnostic and follow up method while participating in a trial.
Thank ou

Even if you are not in a trial, you are recommended to have scans every 3 months. The exposure to radiation is minimal and the risk of matasis is fairly high. I'd say anyone who would not want scans is taking a very high risk.

I also imagine that continued participation in the trial requires adherence to a predetermined scan schedule and that discontinuing would result in the end of receiving ipilimumab in the trial adjuvant setting.

You have the right to refuse any more scans as the oncologist will just state it on your trial report that the patient has refused the scans. Been there and done it.
The following info I posted before but is worth reposting
WOW…. finally someone else that doesn't want to do more scans… more research… more cures! My oncologist wanted me to do more CAT scans to evaluate my progress and I told him about 3 different ways to check for reoccurrence. I did two of the three test for under $100.00. The third one is about $850.00, which I would gladly pay for had the first two tests warrant that I take the third test. The good news is that I am still NED. I will redo these tests periodically. We both agreed that if the test reading would change that we would regroup. These tests use urine or blood without radiation. To determine if one still has cancer in their system, see the following links.-

The most accurate pregnancy test is made by "Aimstrip" I bought mine online from a company called Earth Magic on http://www.Amazon.com My testing strip were delivered quickly in a few days. The cost is about $2.50 each.If you do the pregnancy test and it comes back positive, I can give you the names of other tests to determine how much of the cancer is still present in your body.————————————-Most people don't know that 70 to 80% of all cancers could be prevented by having their vitamin D3 levels in the higher testing range. Testing is a must. Your doctor can add this test to the rest of blood testing that you are all ready doing. You can also do this on your own. The SUN is the best way to increase your vitamin D3 levels. Lunch time is the best, no sunscreen and no sunburns!!! In my opinion, it's time to quit blaming the the SUN as the cause of melanoma as the SUN is the source of life. Maybe we should focus more on our personal lifestyles, stress, lack of sleep and one's diet!-

To measure your vitamin D performance and discover how it affects your health, you have to know your vitamin D serum levels and health status first.

Things can change quickly with Melanoma, I went from NED stage 3 , to tumours in my right lung and 3 little guys in my brain, this happened after 3 non eventfull scans over the coarse of 9 months after doing Interferon high dose ( 2012) for 4 weeks. The oncologist actually on the 4th scheduled scan suggested we just do a x-ray to keep the levels of radiation down. He came back with" we see a shadow on your right lung, so we need to do a Ct to get a better image. " Long story short, this was now June of 2013 and I am on a drug trial from BMS ( PD-1 or CTLA-4 or both). I go for my scans now every 6 weeks to see if the trial drugs are working. I am what they refer to as a partial responder, with some shrinkage and no new growths. Knowing what is happening with the Melanoma in my body is very important to me. The trial choice was also an easy one to make, I want to be around for a little bit longer!!!!
