I am curious to know if anyone has any experience taking Adderall or any other type of stimulant during treatment to combat fatigue and lack of concentration. I am currently on tafinlar and mekinist, and undergoing radiation of the spine and whole brain radiation. Fatigue and the inability to focus is really the only side effect I am experiencing. I see my doctor tomorrow and would like to discuss with her. I first wanted to know if anyone had any experience with this. I started a new job about a month ago and would like to plow ahead and continue working. Sitting around all day is just not an appealing option for me. I appreciate the anticipated responses.

Hi Brian, I will ask my Oncologist next week if she has heard of Adderall being used to offset the side effects of fatigue. I guess if you can get a drug with Amphetamine in it (legally) to keep you awake for your job why not do it!!! I would want to know the chances of becoming hooked to it, or how addictive it is!!! Best wishes!!! Ed

Adderall can be highly addictive as it is an amphetamine and a controlled substance. Also, it's not that easy to get a prescription for it for these reasons as well.
A good alternative, a non amphetamine ADHD drug, is Straterra. It's the only non amphetamine ADHD medication that is approved for adults. I would look into using something like that over a strongly addictive drug. Obviously, talk to your doc, see what they say about using any of these drugs.

I had a lot of these same issues while on Interferon and though I considered asking for some type of medication to help me concentrate and work like you are now, I never ended up following through with it.
You may want to consider asking your doctor about Provigil, a non-stimulant drug, that was originally prescribed for narcolepsy, but is now coming into more common use to help with wakefulness, cognition and concentration. It may be that your Doc might be more willing to prescribe this medication. In my experience (dealing with depression issues years ago where my main problem was extreme tiredness and poor concentration), doctors are very reluctant to use Adderall or other stimulants with addiction potential unless they feel there is no alternative.
Adderall could do the trick, too, but just a thought if you run into resistance. I've been in your shoes, or at least very similar ones, and I can empathize with wanting something to give you that extra boost you need to work. Good luck.

Hi Brian – my husband's oncologist prescribed Ritalin, another ADHD drug, to combat fatigue. He had other issues come up and never really took it long so hard to say what, if any, benefit it provided. Take care.

I wanted to give everyone an update. I saw my nurse practioner yesterday and told her about my extreme fatigue and lack of concentration. I am currently on tafinlar/mekinist, keytruda, and undergoing radiation to both the spine and whole brain. I asked her about adderall or other stimulants to help me get through the day at work and she said it is something I could try. I got the prescription last night and have already taken it this morning. I can definitely already tell a difference. I feel more energized and focused. My survival is obviously my main concern but my quality of life is also extremely important. She started me on a very low dose and I hope this does the trick. So far I am very encouraged and am excited to have some clarity and focus in my head – it has been a difficult few weeks.

Glad to hear you got a prescription and it's already working for you. Hope it helps you feeling a little "normal" among these not so normal times.
All the best,
