A week ago I had a mole removed and biopsied. The doctor just called with the results "Atypical Intraepidermal Melanocytic Proliferation". She said I need to return for a deeper and wider incision. What exactly does this mean (is it already cancer/ how likely is it cancer?) and how soon should I schedule the appointment?

      Thank you!

This is not cancer. This is an atypical mole that is in your epidermis (only the outer most layer of skin). An excision is for extra assurance this won't cause issues for you in the future. Some derms only do excisions on severely atypial lesions and not just atypical, others are extra cautious. This does not mean it would have for certain become melanoma, just an extra precaution since the more atypical cells there are means the higher the possiblity of cancerous activity. Get the excision, continue with annual derm visits, and you'll likely never deal with melanoma.
