Smoking pot to treat cancer treatmenet side-effects is as old as 28 years ago when I smoked it w/my mom when she had ovarian cancer. But now there is all this talk about cannabus in different forms to FIGHT cancer – to fight the tumors. Hemp oil, CBD or THC, brownies, Charlotte's Web, balm, capsules, cannabinoids–HELP!!! I went on Amazon and some prices ranged from $65 to $650. Where do I start, what do I buy…

Can you please share your successes and failures with me?

My son has been in the hospital (ER Sat. night – lost strength in right leg,(again) but this time he couldn't walk, and then pretty fast cognitive decline right after, so they had to increase amount of steroids. Each time he has had the brain mets swelling and thhese sroke-like side-effects and then goes on the steroids he gets better, but each time a little less better. He's far from normal now, so I;m wondering how much steroids can you take and for how long until they just don't work anymore and will it be before the tumors respond to the Ketruda infusions – if and when they do?

Thank you all in advance, now I gotta go to bed.Batteries dying and Dr making rounds in 3=4 hours, I'll check in tomorrow.

Sending best wishes to allof you,

      SarahA

Hi Sarah, I can't answer your question but just want to say my heart goes out to you. I read your profile and can't imagine having two sons dx with melanoma. When my son was going through surgies and treatments, all my energy went to that and I am not sure how I could have soped with one of my other sons going through it at the same time. I know we deal with whatever comes our way as parents…hang in there!!

You might want to check out this site about cannabis oil and if medicinal marijuana is available in your state.  http://phoenixtears.ca/

                      Hi Sarah,

I'll tell you what I know about this subject, which isn't a lot. Let me second the recommendation that somebody else gave you to consult Rick Simpson's Phoenix Tears website. A woman I know whose husband had bladder cancer did Simpson's program, and she said that doctors talked them into letting them remove her husband's bladder. She told me that when the pathology report came back, there were no signs of cancer anywhere! On the other hand, Tommy Chong did Simpson's program, and said, at least early on "it didn't do a damned thing." He later said that the cannabis products he used helped him relax, and did have some more positive things to say. So it sounds like it's a lot like immunotherapy: it works better for some than for others.

Regarding things like CBD oil. I've found some information on various cannabis sites that says that true CBD oil is only legal in a handful of states. Do not buy things like hemp CBD oil, which I have been told isn't potent enough to do what you want it to do. I've also read that some of the CBD oil you can buy at places like Amazon may have harmful ingredients, from being extracted by using dangerous solvents, some of which can actually cause cancer.

If it were me, I think I would start with Rick Simpson. I hope this info helps.

                            Hi Sarah,

Besides my Dad taking marinol for appetite, I am not an expert on cannabis.  But, marinol has proven very effective for him and he is finally gaining weight.  Regarding the Keytruda, my Dad also experienced swelling of his brain mets after his first Keytruda infusion and eventually ended up back on steroids (after nearly starving himself to death over the intervening weeks).  In any case, he doing much better now and is weaned down to 6 mg of dexamethasone per day.  The doctor is hoping to get him to 2 mg per day of dex (which is almost equivalent to 10 mg of prednisone – which would be an okay steroids level while on Keytruda according to the melanoma specialist in Seattle/at SCCA).  Long story short, our local oncologist gave him a half dosage of Keytruda yesterday and we are going to monitor how he reacts (and if his brain mets begin to swell again).  Then, as he continues to wean off the steroids, he may get the other half of the dosage.  Are your doctors waiting to fully wean your son off the steroids or would they be willing to do Keytruda while he is still on some steroids?  From what I understand, the steroids will prevent the Keytruda from having full efficacy but since the drugs aren't contraindicated and no one really seems to know the right level of steroids during immunotherapy, it makes sense to keep asking about if this is a possibility for your son.

Hoping he begins to feel better soon and that something starts working for him!

                            Best wishes,

                            Carrie

At the worst part of my journey in early 2015, I was on 180mg daily of morphine (bone mets in shoulder and femur), Xanax to relax and sleep, and varying meds to help with mild nausea.    I started to improve in my first treatments with Keytruda and wanted off all these narcotics.  Drove to Colorado and sampled different products that agreed with me to help me ween off of the morphine and help with anxiety and sleep.

Took very small amounts due to the potency and over the course of about 8 weeks was able to get off of everything.  Went from @5 scripts a day to 0.  Keytruda was working very well, so it surely wasn't the pot/THC edibles alone, but it certainly helped with the transition to get off of everything.  Now I just use it in the evenings @ 1-2x a week for relax/anxiety.

Carrie, I was worried about being on prednisone (small-medium daily doses) and Keytruda at the same time and MD Anderson mentioned that there isn't anything conclusive but studies are showing that low-medium doses didn't have an effect.  I faired very well while on both and now am off steroids due to my adrenal function at 100% thanks to those tumors shrinking significantly.

                                        About the MRF Patient Forum

The MRF Patient Forum is the oldest and largest online community of people affected by melanoma. It is designed to provide peer support and information to caregivers, patients, family and friends. There is no better place to discuss different parts of your journey with this cancer and find the friends and support resources to make that journey more bearable.

The information on the forum is open and accessible to everyone. To add a new topic or to post a reply, you must be a registered user. Please note that you will be able to post both topics and replies anonymously even though you are logged in. All posts must abide by MRF posting policies.
