      Hello,

I will receive the results of my biopsy in a few days.  However, in spite of all my searching, I have yet to find an answer to this question.  Can a common mole changed to having all the warning signs of melanoma and not be melanoma?

My experience is this.  I had a long time common mole that has been looked at by my dermatolgist and determined to be "typical" by her observation.  Recently I noticed it changed to have all the warning signs of melanoa (possessing all the ABC's you are told to look for).  Do any of you have experience with a mole changing in this way and it being benign or should I prepare myself for a melanoma diagnosis?

      Thank you,

      LP

I have had changing mole NOT be melanoma, but they have all been atypical to some degree.  Atypical lesions are just that, not considered cancerous but not totally benign either.  So you are prudent having it removed, but you don't have to come to the worst conclusion while you wait.

Thank you for your reply, as it is nice to read.  I have Googled this question over and over and have not seen where a changing mole (with melanoma-like changes) can be benigh.  I'm trying to stay positive, but admittedly it's a challenge.  I think this past week has been the longest of my life.  I hope to receive the results this coming Thursday.

If it is Melanoma, what should I expect to do next?

Don't go there yet.  Just get a copy of the pathology report no matter the diagnosis.  The next step — regardless of the diagnosis — is dependent upon that report.  And with melanoma, the details matter in how we respond.   Our advise is dependent upon that report.  Encouragement is the best we can give at this point!

Okay, thanks for the advise and encouragement.  The office is scheduled to call me with the results.  Without this reminder to get the report, I likely would not think to do so while on the phone.  Either way, the news they have for me will surely make me emotional.

I've had several changing moles NOT be melanoma. I've had regular skin checks for 10-15 years and my dermatologist has biopsied 8-10 times for things that look suspicious or have changed. Until this year, they have all been fine. So when she hit the jackpot this year with both basal cell and melanoma, I was surprised. I hope you get a good report.
