I've been lurking in the shadows and wearing tons of sunscreen.  I have not had my VitD level checked yet, but am still going to suppliment.  I am 32 YO male.

      Thanks,

      Adam

My mom had a vitamin D3 deficiency, so she was on 50,000 units weekly.  The doctor said that my mom will reduce soon, so we're not sure what is a "normal" amount, but we want to know how much to supplement as well.

Was on 2000iU a day until my levels went into normal range, now on 1000iU a day to maintain it.

I take 5,000 every other day but I need to get my levels checked.   My dose could be too high.  My bro-in-law is a chemist and I believe he said vitamin D is a fat-solvable vitamin so take it with fats for max effect.    I have it at night with a little ice cream or milk.

I do try to get a bit of sun occasionally (usually on the wknd) in the AM or late afternoon for natural vitamin D but I am never out for more than 10-12 min.

                      Hello Adam,

My husband was told 35 times your weight so if you weigh 100 lbs then 3500.  Sometimes it is still to low and you need to be tested.  The blood test for it is Hydroxy 25.  Almost everyone above Atlanta, GA is deficient.  If you are using sunscreen it also helps to block it and keeps you from absorbing.  10 – 20 minutes a day is all that is needed with skin exposed to absorb enough naturally between 10 and 2 and at 10 minutes you shouldn't burn.

Also it is not really a vitamin but is actually a hormone.

My D3 was at 17 and I fell and broke my arm because when it is to low it steals the calcium out of your bones and I was put on the 50,000 until the levels came up.  Make sure it is Vit. D3 and not D2.  It also is recommended that  you should take Vitamin K with it.
