Hi, I have a small black mole that appeared with a couple of other moles during puberty. A year ago, I noticed the mole felt a bit rough and when I rubbed my finger on it black skin flaked off. Ever since then, it'll occassionally do this. New black areas will grow and the mole will get rough/dry and the top layer will eventually peel off. What could be the cause of this? Is this a symptom of melanoma? I searched online and it says a flaking mole could be cancerous and now I'm freaking out

PLEASE go and see a dermatologist. PLEASE. No one here can tell you for sure what it is you have, but a doctor will be able to give you more information and will put your mind at rest. Most likely it is nothing serious, but would you bet your life on it? Remember, skin cancer is very treatable in early stages. Don't take any chances, ok? x

Yes, see a dermatologist, but it could also be something as simple as a seborrheic keratosis.  They can be dark and they tend to have a "top" than can sometimes be peeled off.   Better check things out and then you know what you are dealing with!

I had a spot on my neck exactly like this…I had two different nurse practitioners tell me that it was nothing and prob just dry “definitely not melanoma” because it wasn’t discolored and it was perfectly round. I had it removed last week because it itched like crazy and my dermatologist said it was probably keratosis…yesterday I was told it was melanoma and it was at least 1.75mm. Idk how bad it is yet, idk if it’s spread to lymph nodes, but I do know you shouldn’t wait to get it checked. If mine hadn’t of itched idk how long it may have been before I went.

Itching is definitely a sign of "change" and as such, should be shown to a derm.  Many people with melanoma have had itching moles, however itching by itself doesn't mean something is definitely melanoma.

                  Good luck on your results!

                  Ariana,

Please listen to the previous posts! Absolutely go see a dermatologist and get this checked out. My melonma started as a black mole that itched, flaked, scabbed, and even bled. Like a fool, I dismissed it for months before going to a dermatologist. I can't be sure that a few months made a difference in the overall progression of my melanoma (currently stage IV) but much data shows without much debate that early detection results in better outcomes!!! GO SEE A DERM…please.
