Hi All! Sooo, here I thought maybe, just maybe that I'd never see the likes of melanoma again. I got a shocker. Well, in a way, that little voice seems to quite never disappear…but, it was a good run for over 10yrs.
A little background: I was first diagnosed with 2C back of upper right arm (lymph nodes were clean) & went through a full year of high dose interferon. I never lost weight on it, if anything, I still had my appetitie. I was a lot more sensitive to salt as I remember. I went to the infusion room at the hospital everyday for the first 30 day & then I gave myself a shot in the stomache 3x a week for the next 11 months. I had excellent PPO insurance at this time.
Fast forward to today & no Insurance: A few months ago I had a bit of a nodular bulge in the abdomen area—I thought it might be a hernia. I went to a community type clinic and they said it was cellulitis–prescribed me a very strong antibiotic I had never had before for 10 days. The side effects were horrendous. On day 8/9 my whole body was on fire & I was red & blotchy…then I looked in the mirror and was covered head to toe with little red dots. I freaked out. Found out after calling the pharmicist that is an allergic reaction…popped a few benadryl. It took several days to over a week to get it out of me. So, the little bulge remained, but, now started to change…went to another clinic and they said it looked like an abscess and to go to the ER. The ER admitted me to the hospital for surgery. They believed it to be a hematoma. They did make comments as to the fact they have never seen anything quite like it before. (now here comes that little voice) Surgery went well & I was impressed they didn't try and kick me out of the hospital sooner since I don't have insurance. I was there a couple days & they wanted to keep me a 3rd day (but, I had a dog at home & convinced them to let me go) They sent samples off to pathology. I learned how to pack the wound & change my own dressing, but, also utilized the free clinic services. A few weeks go by & I mention that close to the incision area that it feels tough & denser. I also had a follow up appt with the surgeon (he didn't charge me for the visit & cut what I owed in 1/2) he said it was healing beatifully…so I went with it. More time passes and I go back to the surgeon's office & that's when I found out the bad news. He said it came back as melanoma. He was shocked. I am, too and frozen.
So, in the last couple weeks it has redeveloped again and gotten larger & I will now have to self admit back into the ER to get surgery again. I. AM. SCARED.
I am looking for any guidance, tips, support, friendship, etc. I need to get a plan together, but, everything is moving so slow, but, melanoma is not on any schedule.
Thank you for reading my long-winded intro!
~Cindy

Hello, Cindy. I am so sorry that you are going through this. You sound like a very strong and courageous person. Thank you for sharing your story. I am new on this forum, and I'm learnng a lot from others like you. I had a mole on my back taken off at the University of Chicago last Monday, and I'm waiting on the biopsy results.
I know that you have a lot on your plate right now, but what about getting insurance through Obamacare? It would be better than no insurance.
I think that you'd want to be treated by doctors who specialize in melanoma, but I don't know how you can accomplish that with no insurance.
Is there any way that you can get an appointment at Moffitt?
You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Please keep us posted.

Hi Diana, thank you kindly for your reply & your support as well as prayers.
I sure wish there was someone that could make all these calls & tapping on other peoples' shoulders for me, but, I'm trying.
As I understood it, it is not open enrollment for Obamacare…please, anyone correct me if I'm wrong. I'd rather get to a sspecialist, but, I need for the new growth to go like STAT. So, I figured self admitting to the ER is better than waiting untill I can coordinate everything else & a plan of action.
I put in a call to Moffitt, but, still need to jump through the hoops and see what is what there.
I also reached out to a place that does alternative treatments with the Gerson therapy and many others. They're making a documentary, so, I'm trying to get my name in the hat to be considered.
In a perfect world, I would be at the Burzinski Clinic in Texas, where they use anti-neoplastins. There's an amazing documentary called "Cancer is Serious Business: Dr. Burzinski" highly recommend for anyone to watch–eye opener!
I'm trying to be strong. I'm scared though. I dread going back to the ER. It's not a pleasant experience. Bedside manners are nowhere to be found in there.
I'm trying to find someone to temporaily take my dog so I can just focus on me & my health. I can't afford to board him & the ideal situation is him in a home. I can't properly walk him, bathe him, etc right now. I may have two different folks that can temp foster him 🙂
If there is anything that I can answer for you based off my experience, please feel free to reach out to me. I'm sorry to hear that you were diagnosed as well. I'll pray for you as well 🙂

Hi Cindy,
I am sorry for all you are dealing with. I would certainly start my search for care at Moffitt. Have been a patient there myself for the past 5 years. I would flat out ask what options they have for indigent patients. They have social workers and such there…the worst they can say is no. Plus, you would get top notch melanoma care. I bet they would work something out for you that would be cheaper than repeated ER visits as well as more profitable.
I am not opposed to all alternative therapies….but your mentioning Gerson scared me! I've been dealing with melanoma since 2003 and I've watched too many dear ones die while on Gerson therapy!! Additionally, it is expensive! Here is a post that addresses it if you are interested: http://chaoticallypreciselifeloveandmelanoma.blogspot.com/2013/01/better-diet-advice-for-melanoma_13.html
Fingers crossed for you and really, really hoping that Moffitt will find a way to help you with services!!! Hang in there. Celeste

Maggie, we all know that you are a defender of the quack Dr.s like Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez and now I guess Gerson. I would rather drink my Tim Hortons coffee in the morning than have it used as an enemas as Gonzalez once promoted , and now Dr. Linda Isaacs still pushes his BS. To base a cancer treatment on hair analysis sent to some remote research facilty in Louisianna is beyond me. Type quack, then his name and you get the whole story. When, I type my Oncologist name, I don't get a long history of quackery. Gonzalez based most of his teachings on some dentist named Kelly, who did cancer research and then misteriously disappeared after he couldn't get his work published. The history of Gonzalez reads more like a bad movie script than medical science.

Both Dr Kelley and Dr Gonzalez had thousands of documented biopsy proven last stage cancer patients who survived long after the standard survival time for their cancers.
In fact Dr G originally spent five years researching Kelleys patients in a bid to expose him as a quack and then after looking at all the medical reports and interviewing thosuands of patients he realised that Dr Kelley was onto something and when Dr Kelley retired Dr G stated using his therapies.
Both Dr G and Dr Isaacs are formally trained doctors so they are not quacks they just follow a treatment plan that you and many others dont understand but they get results and that is why thousands of people have used them.
Just remenber the standard treatment for late stage melanoma patients up until recently has been interferon and that is about it and it has been provem largely ineffective in treating cancer yet it is still used and offered..
Now who are the quacks still offering such a treatment that destroys quality of life with little or no benefit.
Both alternative treatments and mainstream treatments have their place and you should always do what is comfortable for yourself but both modalities have saved peoples lives as have combinations of both mainstream and alternative.

It's the quantity of long-term survivors of various advanced cancers that impressed me most about Dr. Gonzalez which is why I went to see him. For all the negativity written about him, no one has refuted any of his published case studies of biopsy-proven long-term survival of advanced cancers.
I'm not as familiar with Gerson but having a treatment not work for everyone is not evidence that it doesn't work for some. If it were, none of the current treatments would be considered successful.

Cindy:
If at all possible you should seek treatment at a good melanoma center. Moffitt is right there in Tampa and they have an excellent team. I suggest you contact them, explain your situation, and see if they can help.
If you have questions about costs of care and dealing with care without insurance you could call our toll-free Help line. It is staffed by oncology social workers who have experience in these areas:

Thanks guys…I am aware of Moffitt & have already contacted them—but, it's not a zippy process. Crossing fingers as I move forward that I can get approved for some top notch care. In the meantime, I will have to self admit into the ER to remove the fast growing growth. I am shocked how fast it has grown in a matter of a couple of weeks.
To the gal that mentioned about Gershon (sorry I can't see your name as I'm typing in this reply)–it's just something that I thought about, but, certainly not my preferred choice. 🙂
I really appreciate everyone for responding—I feel so alone going through this right now. I just don't really have anyone I can chat over the phone to about this (I did apply for the phone buddy through here, which I think is an awesome idea!)

I found this on Moffit's website, under Insurance FAQ's:
What do I do if I lose my insurance?
If you lose health insurance coverage, there are options to get you back on track. If you lose your job for any reason, you have the opportunity to select from two main options for health insurance coverage: Affordable Care Act Plan or COBRA continuation coverage. To learn more about these coverage options, visit healthcare.gov or feel free to call us with any questions at 1-800-456-3434 ext. 8422.

If you lose your job for any reason, you have the opportunity to select from two main options for health insurance coverage: Affordable Care Act Plan or COBRA continuation coverage. Thanks DianaD, but, I do not qualify for Obamacare & cobra was not an option. Also, (last I researched) one can only get Obamacare during open enrollment. At this point, it looks like I might qualify for disability. Going to be doing the paperwork next week.

Good luck with your disability application. If you don't mind posting, it would be interesting to know the process you have to go through, and whether it's approved, based on your initial application. I've heard that if they deny you benefits (Social Security), you should appeal.
