Is it nodular melanoma? He doesn’t want to see a doctor

My boyfriend has a blue-black mole on his collarbone. It's about the size of a pencil eraser. He's had it for 2 years. About 3 months ago, it ruptured and bled, then refilled. He was on an airplane at the time, so he thought the pressure might have contributed. Sometimes it seems flat, sometimes it seems to stick out more.

The problem is he won't see a doctor. He's mildly concerned and hasn't done the research that I've done. I'm definitely the worrier of the group.

I understand that only a doctor can tell us for sure. My question is whether these characteristics sound like nodular melanoma? It's smooth, shiny and feels a bit squishy. I can indent it with my fingernail.

Any input appreciated, and again, I know that everyone's feedback is just opinions and should be taken with a grain of salt.

      Thanks in advance.

First of all no one can tell you if it is melanoma just by a description, even doctors have made bad prognosis by visual exams. The only way to find out is to visit a dermatologist and have a punch biopsy. I had a nodular melanoma and the cancer went into quite a few of my organs, brain included. So the choice is visit the derm, if melanoma get treatments. The other choice is take the chance off your life and sit back and see what happens. Once the melanoma is deeper than 1mm, it will get into your blood or lymph system and then all hell will break loose.

As John says above, the ONLY way to know is via a biopsy.

IF it turned out to be melanoma, the bleeding might represent ulceration.   An ulcerated primary is at a much higher risk of metasticising than a non-ulcerated primary.

Try to talk him into going to the doctor.

I would go and get a full derm exam. Seriously!!!

Thanks everyone. I try to convince him everyday and have used every tactic in the book. I'll keep trying. Just was hoping to find myself some peace of mind in the meantime since my stress level is sky-high over this.

Looks like he has no respect for his life and also of your feelings toward him. You should part ways with him, find someone that respects and enjoys being alive.

Has he read this thread? If his resistance is due to thinking you’re a worrier, maybe it would convince him. If he’s actually worried himself and doesn’t want you to know, there may be far more to worry about the longer he waits.

He's on his way to the doctor's right now — Finally!

Thank you all for your support. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thank you! The mysterious black mole came back as benign, and they removed it. We were lucky. Thanks to everyone for the support. It made me push him harder and he finally went to the doctor. This forum and the people using it are terrific. I wish you all positive outcomes!

I had a nodular melanoma diagnosed in June. I first noticed it in April. It was a flesh colored pea sized bump on my arm. It had a wide excision and negative sentinal lymph node biopsy.
The tumor had a depth of 9mm so a deep tumor does not guarantee the cancer has spread to the lymph. My scans were clear but due to the high risk of reoccurrence I have decided to join a clinical trial where I get monthly infusions of Opdivo.

I wish you luck. The results so far sound encouraging.
