I bave a question about melanocytes. On a biopsy report or excision should there be any melanocytes left in there at margins? Are melanocytes always there? Are we just worried about the atypical melanocytes?

Okay that didnt make sense. What I am wondering is are there always melanocytes in our biopsies or at margins no matter what but what is concerning isnif there us over population of melanocytes ir atypical melanocytes? My biopsy report stated “there seems to be a normal population of melanocytes” but I read somewhere here that when they check for margins there shouldn’t be any melanocytes left? I think I am misunderstanding something

Melanocytes are cells of neural crest origin. In the human epidermis, they form a close association with keratinocytes via their dendrites. Melanocytes are well known for their role in skin pigmentation, and their ability to produce and distribute melanin has been studied extensively.
