I was just diagnosed with melanoma in situ and it comes out next week. My question is how many of you had a recurrence? My husband is also Stage 3b melanoma and just finished 18 months of Opdivo. Can’t believe I have it now too. The melanoma is 1.1×1.1×0.6 cm is that large?

      Thank you for listening. Donna

          Hi Donna!
Are you sure that’s in situ and not 1A? Do you have your pathology report? I don’t have the diameter on mine, but it was o.3 mm deep and was considered 1A.
By definition, an in situ has not invaded into the skin, so it’s not going to recur. In fact, the vast majority of 1As will not every recur (it’s been 2 years and mine hasn’t, nor have most people’s) — but almost none of us continue to post on this board with a 1A or in situ. This is not something to worry about. Once you have it removed, go to your regular derm appointments for your full-body checks (which you probably already know) and just look for changes in your scar and other parts of your skin. Do know that it will take time for the scar to totally heal, so you may get some little bumps and things in your scar during the first 3-6 months that might look like a recurrence but are most likely leg hair 🙂 or a buried stitch popping out. Good luck with the WLE!

My 1a returned 15 years later. Three doctors dismissed my concerns that melanoma could come back after such a long period. Well, it did. And the melanoma specialist that I am now seeing says that the cells can stay dormant for a long time … recurrence is not as uncommon as they once thought.
              Better to remain vigilant.
