So here it goes…. I have this mole on my scalp, always had it, it was about the size of a sharpie marker tip, well about a week ago my wife noticed it was bigger…a lot bigger, and dark, black in color and raised, so I set up an appointment with a dermatologist, got in quick, next day actually. The derm looks at it measures it, he says about 8-9mm, then looks at me and says it’s benign. He says it looks fine because the edges look good. That’s it nothing more, I tried asking questions, didn’t let me get a word in, by that time I was pretty frustrated. He said he wouldn’t even recommend taking it off because it’s on my head and not really visible. He didn’t give me an explanation as why it grew in size in a matter of months….should I be concerned, or am I overthinking this? Everything I read says that growth and color change is bad,I guess I just some opinions, should I get a second look at it from a different derm?

Get a second opinion. Change of any kind should be enough for a derm to biopsy just to make sure it is ok. Very well could be nothing, but you won't know unless you biopsy and since change has already been noted, I'd get a second derm to take a look and tell them to biopsy it.

Advocate for yourself and get a new doc who will take it off. I ran into some <slight> resistance when asking my doctor to take off a mole last year that just didn't look right on my leg. He was not impressed and tells me, "it will leave a scar". Long story short, I insist and he removes it. Turns out it was an early melanoma, much to everyone's surprise. I feel very lucky that it was caught in time. You know your body best and have to live with the decision and consequences, the doctor doesn't. Good luck!

Hello,
I totally agree with what the others commented, get another opinion and insist it be removed since there have been changes.
My husbands melanoma started when a mole on his scalp changed and started growing. It took him a while to get into a dermatologist and the other part was he was being stubborn about going to a doctor. His was removed and the derm said he didn't think it was anything but at the worst would be basal cell. Well two weeks later he wants him in the office ASAP. He then tells him it is melanoma and he is sending him to a specialist to have it removed. That was Jan. 2008 and it was 10.5 mm.
My husband had this mole for a long time and the only ones that ever saw it were barbers (which was me at the time). He has very dark brown hair and very thick.
If you would like to read more about his journey you can read his profile.
I hope yours in nothing but I would get it checked out and removed.
