I have a question: about 1 1/2 year ago I had a mole on my back removed. This happend in the largest academical hospital in Amsterdam. The result whas strange: my dermatologist said they where sure that it whas not a melanoma but they could not really say what it whas.

My dermatologist recommed to remove extra margins around it, to make sure it would not grow back. I,m not sure how big those extra margins are I think between 0,5 and 1 cm

It might be important to mention that before the mole or whatever whas removed I pick alot on it and tried to scab it off myself. Not a smart move I know but this might be the reason why they could not really see what it whas.

My question is does this happen more, that they could not really say what it is? and can they exclude melanoma but no say what it whas?

Ask for the Patolohogy report!  There is no way that melanoma can be ruled out without a Pathologist doing an annalysis.  DID they even send it to a Pathologist?

As Jerry said, you can ask for the pathology report.  In addition, the biopsy slides are usually kept and you could have those same slides sent to another pathologist for a second opinion.  Not sure how the health care works on your side of the pond but that is what would happen here.

They did send it to a pathologist according my GP the reason why they removed extra margins is that they did not cutt the whole mole out. (punch biopsy). (September 2012).

Only she never recieved a letter from the hospital with the result of that punch biopsy or extra margins removal. I'm now waiting on a call from my dermatologist from the hospital.

according to my GP I should not worry to much because they would never let me loose if they found a melanoma.

I had a melanoma removed 3 years ago (stage 2). they found nothing in the lymph nodes and found nothing in a new CT, MRI or PET scans.

In nov 2013 I had trouble with my left leg and arm, my wife took me to the emergency room.

They did a CT scan and then an MRI and found 7 tumers in my brain.

They removed 3 tumers surgically, and then did a gamma knife procedure for the other 4.

I was in the hospital for 2 weeks and had pt at home for another week. I now have control of my body again.

I am now getting YERVOY infuesions every 3 weeks (completed 3 of 4). There is a 20% 3 year survival rate with this.

I get another MRI next week.

It seams melanoma never leaves the body.

even an early WLE, never leaves the body?  should we be scanned periodically (CT)?
