Hi I am a carer for my sister which has stage 4 Melanoma, initially about 6 years ago she had a cancerous mole removed, they took her lymph gland and said she was cancer free 1 year later. Now in 2011,She never really thought any more about it until 3 months ago she started sleeping alot and was suddenly admitted to hospital where they found melanoma in her left ovary which they removed. She then went for a bowel scan where they found spots in her bowel and large melanoma in her intestines and stomach wall. My sister and my family was given the bad news that she had only 12 weeks to live. After being given the awful news they were going to send her directly from the hosiptal into pallative care. My sister is married and has a 10yr old daughter and after seeing palliative care we decided because my sister is 41 years old she asked her what she wanted to do. She said to us all I want to do is go home. She went home and spent three weeks at home until she started throwing up and became servely dehydrated. She is now in the local hospital she has deterioated to the point where she can not hold down food, they have taken the drip away. She is extremly bloated we believe the melanomas are bleeding inside her stomach as her platelets are 67% she is anemic and she has an infection. We are now in week 9 and she was told on wednesday that she may have a couple of days to live? As a family member I would like to know what I can take to the hospital for her to eat as she cant hold down any food, maybe boiled lollies? We got my sister new sateen Pjs to make her feel special. It is so boring in hospital no TV although she has magazines to read. I am wondering if there is anyone out there who has been in the same position as me. We are currently awaiting a bed in Calvery Hospital.
A loving sister
Karen

Karen,
I'm sorry to hear about your sister. I can't imagine how difficult this has been on your family. It sounds like she was not offered any systemic treatment which does surprise me.
You have posted on the off topic board. I think you will get more answers if you repost on the main bulliten board. I know that when I've been in the hospital I always seem to crave fresh fruit like watermelon and canteloup. Not sure if that is true for others.
Wishing your family the best,
Linda
