      Hello. I had surgery in 2017 for a Stage 1A melanoma on my bottom right leg. At times the scar area swells a bit, or aches,, but lately I’ve noticed a sharp “needle” feeling, in the scar area. My friend thinks it’s nerve damage, which could be possible. However, it didn’t hurt like this a year ago. It comes and goes lately and only lasts a couple of seconds. Is it possible scar healing can produce this feeling two years after surgery? Or should I be concerned?

          Hi K Mann,

          I get the same thing (lessening over time) after the WLE of a 1A in my thigh. I have no reason to think it’s anything other than nerve damage. Incidentally after healing up (took a while) I had to do a lot of extra stretching and use a roller to break up a little scar tissue and loosen everything up. That also seemed to help with the nerves.

                I had my surgery about 2.25 years ago. No second melanoma so far — just a lot of weird moles.

                I have that now too from my wide excision. My primary care doctor at a recent visit said most likely nerve damage. It does ache and feels like needles there at times. Donna

                    Hi Donna,

                    That sounds like mine. It aches and feels like needles at time. I didn’t feel needles, however, until two years after surgery. But from what I’ve been reading it appears this is not abnormal because nerves are starting to heal.

                    Nerve healing/regeneration takes the longest however if there is some damage one may continue to have a sensation of numbness, tingling and even a slight itch. I had a mole removed from my back in 1997 and I still feel a twinge every now and then.

                        Hi Melanie,

                        Thank you. It appears from all these posts I shouldn’t necessarily worry about this. Only lately has the needle pain happened, and I’m feeling achy in that area (but that’s been going on off and on since the surgery). I’ll see my dermatologist in December and discuss with him as well, but will not be too concerned at this time. Thanks again!
