Hello! I am curious to see opinions about a new mole that appeared by my belly button. Please see my profile photo. … my MD quickly looked and dismissed this one. He will not refer to a dermatologist. I know that diagnosis cannot be made via photo and only professionals can, but if this was your new mole, would you agree with him and drop it, or pursue the issue further? I appreciate your opinions greatly!

Can't say whether or not this mole you have is anything serious, but what I can say is regular primary care doctors have VERY little knowledge about dermatology.. and even less about skin cancer. My own primary MD told me my mole was nothing, I believed her.. now I am here. Not to scare you, but always go with your gut, if it's worrisome to you at all, demand for a referral to a dermatologist or pay out of pocket to see one. New and/or changing moles should always get checked by a dermatologist.

Words from a doc who does mile mapping and research on atypical moles. New and like your other moles is fine. New and different from existing moles or an ugly duckling, see a derm.

Hi — I have several moles that looks like this, but my dermatologist and oncologist are not concerned with them at this point.  But that said, if you are uncomfortable with them, you should definitely pursue seeing a dermatologist.  You need to be an advocate for yourself, always.
