I was recently diagnosed with melanoma.  They did a 1cm and think I am going to be fine.  It was found during my routine check.  After something like that you start to pay attention to everything.  I have a small mole like mark (slightly raised) that has been there for a few years.  Hasn't changed in color or shape or size (purplish). The dermatologist has seen it several times and told me I could keep it.  Don't want to be paranoid…want to take his advice.  Have to assume he knows what he is looking at.  Plus all that I read…you are looking for change.  True?

I would recommend having a biopsy done if you don't feel good about it. You've already had a melanoma, in my mind that means you should err on the side of caution and be aggressive when deciding what to biopsy.

Yes, change is the important characteristic but if you are worried then biopsy as Andrew suggested.

My husband had a red colored mole on his back. Had it for years. Never changed color or size. It itched once in awhile but no other “normal melanoma” symptoms. It was perfectly oval. He had it removed because he “didnt like it”. Two doctors looked at it and had no concern. They sent it to mayo along with 3 other moles. The one on his back came back as melanoma. It was growing down-reason it didnt change in width on the surface. Hes 41. Just had 9 lymph nodes removed and we are waiting on the results of one suspicious lymph node. Get it checked out. Atypical. Not all melanoma looks or acts the same! Goodluck!
