My father went in for a routine colonoscopy last month and they discovered a polyp that came back as positive for melanoma.  He had a melanoma insitu on his face in 2010 however had it removed and margins were clear.  Has anyone ever heard of this before?  We're waiting to have scans back to see if it has metastisized elsewhere (praying that it hasn't) so just waiting right now and hoping for the best.  I'd appreciate other stories of people who have had similar experiences!

Melanoma is a tricky, unpredictable cancer that can turn up anywhere at any time!  Unfortunately, those who lives are touched by melanoma have to live with this knowledge.  My husband, Phil had a mucosal melanoma discovered during a colonoscopy and we were shocked by those biopsy results.  But, that was over 4 years ago, and he is still doing well.  The road hasn't been easy, but we are enjoying life!  I would just suggest you make sure he is treated at a cancer center by doctors who specialize in melanoma.  Mucosal melanoma is rare, but will respond to treatments that work on cutaneous melanoma.  Just be aggressive and fight for him to get the best treatments.      All the best,  Valerie (Phil's wife)

That had to be such an unexpected result and I am sorry for this. You are here in the right place, though, for support and help. I have not experienced this exact situation, but I am glad you have come here where you can gain from the experiences of others. Also, I agree with the above post that making plans for him to see a melanoma specialist ( if he isnt already) is paramount. Waiting on scans and results is so difficult and stressful. Keep us posted and I am certain you will find help here.

If the melanoma is on the mucosal tissue, it has a high likelyhood of having the C-kit mutation and oncoprotein.  In this case either the immunotherapies or a targeted c-kit chemo therapy could be effective.  I've been on the C-kit therapy for over 5 years now and staying stable.

Thanks everyone.  Well it got worse.  Wednesday he was at the grocery store and collapsed.  My mom rushed him to the hospital and they had some scans done.  He has 2 brain mets, some in his liver and lungs.  One brain met is large and they are going to perform surgery tomorrow to remove it otherwise he'll die. He has always been religious about going in for all doctor's appointments, he does all of the right things, its just horrible.  They are going to radiate his brain next week to get the spot they are removing, and the other little one that is there.  They'll also start him on Yervoy.  I just can't believe this is happening, its so unfair.   I'm trying to take things one step at a time… first we need a successful surgery.  Please pray for him, we need all the prayers we can get.
