I left Kaiser as quick as I could after being diagnosed, had not good experiences with their oncology and care. There are no strictly melanoma specialists within Kaiser. University hospitals/cancer centers are where the specialists are as that is where the research takes place. I would highly advise she see a specialist outside of Kaiser. She can have them pay for a second opinion outside of Kaiser, as a patient that is her right, so that would be the first step.

Where in Southern CA are you located?
I can provide Melanoma specialists in San Diego area if that is where you are located.

My husband also has Kaiser insurance. We've had nothing but positive experiences there. His oncologist is dr. Roberto Rodriguez – he's been treating my husband for over 2 years. We also go to dr. Omid Hamid at the Angeles Clinic for periodic checkups. If possible, try to get dr. Rodriguez at Kaiser Sunset. He's wonderful and is well versed in melanoma treatment.
best,
Katie

I have Dr Wang at Kaiiser Woodland Hills. Just had my 3rd appt with him. When my daughter and I first met him we had been googling alot. The first words out of his mouth. "You have metastatic melanoma. It is not curable but it is treatable." The next two sentences answered what we were going to ask him. "You need a MRI on the brain to treat that first (60% is spread to brain, PTL mine wasn't in the brain) and then we will treat you with Immunotherapy." That is what we had wanted to ask him. He is also the oncologists of some friends of mine and they highly recommend him. I have only had him for 3 visits and one treatment, but so far I like him, and the entire staff has been great.

The hard part is the waiting for the results. I 'lighted' up in 6 areas of my body. Big surprize these were growing in my body.
