hello everyone. i am wonderign if anyone has any info about choosing to take out sentinel nodes only during CLND to reduce chance of lymphodema ? my husband has a deephip lymph node which we are told is sentinel. because he is concerned about lymphedema, his surgeon is suggesting only takeing out the deep hipsentinel lymph node robotically(as the most potentially dangerous one ) and leaving the surrounding basin ones alone to reduce chance of lympodema . any thougts / comments woudl be very much appreciated. also if this proves positive, would this still qualify him from stage III clinical trials? thank you kindly

Hi ,
CLND means complete lymph node dissection.
If the surgeon takes only the sentinel node then this is effectively a sentinel lymph node biopsy.
How do they know the deep hip one is the sentinel node ? Did it show as enlarged on ultrasound – this would increase the chances of it being positive.
Different trials have different requirements- you could leave the node and be treated as unresectable stage 3 and look at drugs available…some go for this . If you have a treatment in mind or a particular trial it is probably worth discussing with the oncologist….
Try a search on clinical trials.gov advanced search and input you state / location .. you can then read eligibility criteria.
Jury is still out on how helpful CLND is…
Lymphoedema risk seems to be higher if overweight and with lower activity- but it is not easy to predict with any certainty.
Good luck
