      Hello,

Do you know of anyone who has Stage IV melanoma which traveled to their stomach? My significant other's melanoma was removed 6 or 7 years ago, but we found out in March that the stomach problems and severe anemia he had in late February were due to the melanoma traveling to his stomach. He has been taking the Opdivo and Yervoy regimen (soon will be starting just taking Opdivo every two weeks) and we are hoping for the best. But it still is a brutal regimen! I understand that melanoma traveling to the stomach is rare.

      Thank you,

      Sally

          Hi Sally,

Sorry for all that you and yours have been dealing with. Melanoma abdominal mets, even those involving the somach and intestines directly are not as rare as once supposed. I personally have at least 4 melanoma peeps who have dealt with exactly that. Additionally, on a very macabre note, a study on my blog reports that abd/intestinal mets are found on autopsy for most all melanoma patients. Sometimes, due to rather mild and vague symptoms they are not caught early.

Now, contrasting all that yuck with some very positive points….your friend's mets were found AND is now rounding the bend on one of the very best melanoma treatments going! And my 4 abdominal met peeps?  ALL have been through their own personal difficulties and a variety of different treatments…..BUT are all hanging in there!

I wish you and yours my best. Celeste

Hi Sally-my onc is currently watching and waiting on a hotspot near my appendix (I'm 3b). Did your doc know right away that it was melanoma by examining the PET? Or was it vague on the pet?

My significant other was on a trip out of state and was about to fly back home, but was feeling poorly with stomach programs and was extremely weak for several days prior to his return trip to home.  On the way to the airport for the return trip he felt so ill that he checked himself into the hospital instead of getting on the plane.  The hospital ran a series of tests and found he was extremely anemic, gave him blood transfusions, and kept him at the hospital for several days.  Upon his return we still did not have the results from the pathology report and it was finally faxed to us indicating, among other things, "Metastatic melanoma, ulcerated."  My understanding is that a PET scan just reveals the presence of abnormal cells, but not necessarily if it is melanoma, which would need to be determined by a biopsy.
