Hi, Felicity. I wish you all the best for this coming 2012 New Year. I am the wife and mother of three Melanoma patients. My husband was diagnosed with Melanoma Stage II in 1995. The tumor and Metastasis on his neck were resected . He is doing well after the operation. He has survived for 16 years now and we hope he will survive for longer. My children also were diagnosed with primary melanoma at a later stage (2004 and 2007). Yo have to be under the supervision of an Oncologist of course, but there is something that I advise you can do for yourself: Try not getting depressed please, otherwise your immunological system will get down and will not help you to fight Melanoma. Keep a sane diet full of fruits and veg. You can also scan your body every 3-6 months by taking pictures of your moles and then comparing them by the time, in such a way that you could notice any change in size or color on them and could take the necessary steps. In the mean time, just try to enjoy your life !!!. I am praying for you too. Good luck !!!

Are seeing an oncologist? An oncologist can best answer and give treatment options. Keep asking questions here, there are a wealth of information on this board and you will get replays. If you haven’t already it would be a good idea to fill out your profile. This will help people answer your questions.I was diagnosed with melanoma a year ago stage IIb. I see a dermatologist every 3 months,my oncologist every month because I was on Interferon. Now that I done with interferon I started seeing him every three months.

>Can someone tell me what i do now
For stage II, do you get to see an oncologist? If so, make sure you're beeing seen by melanoma specializing oncologist. One place to make sure this happens is at a melanoma clinic at an NCI-designated cancer center. Non-melanoma specializing oncologists will not be very helpful to you.
As someone above said, sun protection to minimize the chance of another primary (these do happen, I had 2 primaries seven years apart). Also exercise, healthy diet, rest — the immune system is a big melanoma fighter, so everything you can do that is a) comfortable, b) helps generate strong immune responses, is a good thing.

Hi
4 years ago I was diagnosed with Stage T2a…Melanoma 1.01 to 2.0 mm in thickness with no ulceration.
Stage T2b is the same but with ulceration. I underwent excision with 10cm margins. Then I was advised to have a PET scan to check for mets (thats metastatic melanoma). The first scan came back clear. I have been having a PET scan every year for the last four years. In Novemeber I had my fifth scan and it was also clear. I also go to a dermatologist every six months for a complete skin body check to see if there are any new melanoma`s. Fingers crossed.
My best advice to you is that you start reading up on everything you can get your hands on about melanoma. Remember it`s you that has it and so you have to take control of your own situation.
I really good book on PET scans is the following…
PET-CT in Clinical Practice by T.B.Lynch it is published by Springer…there is a really good section on Melanoma with case histories…this book is very easy to read and not in the least technical…
Good Luck
