Hello, I’m a 57 year old woman.  I have had a normal small round raised mole on my arm since I can remember.  However over the past several days I have noticed a sudden change in it’s appearance along with itching.  It appears swollen and feels harder when I touch it.  I am quite fair skinned with blue eyes and both my father and sister were treated for melanoma.  Can someone please let me know if this rapid change is something I should be concerned about?  I don’t want to overreact nor do I want to ignore this situation if it sounds unusual.  Thank you for any information!

Given your family history and the changes to your mole, I think it would be prudent to get it checked out

Thank you & you’re right what with my various risk factors.  I’m just curious to know if it’s normal for such a dramatic change in a mere 48 hours – would you have any idea if this is in any way odd??

Well I just now discovered a never before seen little light brown mole on the bottom of my foot – slightly lighter in the center!!  I’m thinking I should make that appointment asap.  Does melanoma always produce new moles??  Starting to get a bit worried!  Thank you again!

Hi Karen, my advice would be not to worry until given an absolute reason to! However, you also need to be your own advocate, and know your body best. You sound high risk for Melanoma and other skin cancers, and if I were you – I wouldn't stop until you're seen ASAP. Don't let the scheduler push you out to a distant date. If possible, request a call from your doctor or to speak with the nurse and explain. Skin cancer is sooooo much more treatable/curable when identified on the skin as opposed to once it spreads. Hugs from someone who accepted a "4 month appointment wait time" on what turned out to be melanoma, don't put this off. Be well, and sending positivity for a clean report.

                    Hi Again,

It’s possible, but again, a quick visit to a derm/mel specialist would be a good idea.  I find that knowing what’s going on is better than dealing with the anxiety of not knowing.

Given your family history, please get this biopsied/checked by a dermatologist ASAP!
