Suddenly No Health Insurance

My husband was laid off and he will have no health insurance after December 31st. My place of employment would allow him on my plan, but the premiums are very expensive.
His next scan is supposed to be in March. He is stage 4–diagnosed in March of 2017. Last scan in October showed NED.
In August 2021 he will be eligible for Medicare—we were thinking of postponing scan until then. I understand no one has a crystal ball and no one knows what can happen in the months ahead. I would just like some input from people who perhaps have been in this situation. What does one do without health insurance?
Thanks for any advice or suggestions!

You might look at what your options are on healthcare.gov – though you’ll have to move quick because enrollment is open only to of through (not sure which) the 15th: https://www.healthcare.gov/subscribe/?gclid=CjwKCAiAt9z-BRBCEiwA_bWv-Di9wa_M1M4-k6_UK4RGo6X9BG02r25UCTlcyGLobfT53DctnvgTjhoCFkcQAvD_BwE

There is financial aid available depending on income.

I would get some form of insurance including paying the high premiums as long as these cover the scans. If he has to go back on treatment that will cost a fortune so you will need insurance to get you through this. Also what if something else goes wrong? i would definitely pay for insurance – either yours or continuing his old insurance or enrolling in some scheme. i would do this even without melanoma. Good luck, mark

I would absolutely not allow him to go without health insurance. . Depending on the circumstances, COBRA, your health plan, or plan through gov. Absolutely pay it if even if high, without a gap.

Very expensive premium is nothing towards a month of immunotherapy. If you need to drop it after a heart, fine. But it is not worth the consequences of a gap.

Not to sound rude, but my first reaction was: “what a silly question”. So premiums are expensive no doubt, but I had one bill – one bill – that was $167K. Your husband was stage 4 and has had one NED scan? Personally, I’d still be worried going off insurance if I had 4 or 5 years of clean scans under by belt. I understand you’re thinking it’s a small time period to get through, but I wouldn’t even consider it unless I absolutely could not pay the insurance. My math could be off and even I would say things ‘probably’ wouldn’t go to hell in a handbasket over a few months, but … no way I’d risk it. Free country though (sort of).

You know on top of all we are going through at the moment, I really don’t believe you had to throw in “What a silly question”.
It was devastating and actually shocking for him to lose a job after twenty years through no fault of his own. I make a meager salary and the premiums will cut into it sharply.
I was just asking for what others thought, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised about anyone’s comments.
And by the way, I guess I wasn’t clear—-he has many scans over the last few years that were NED —not just the last one.

O’care enrollment ends tonite at 12Pm.

Ocare subsidies depend on income of the year insured. So this years’ income is irrelevant, He could have made a million dollars this year and it has nothing to do with 2021.

he can get premium subsides depending on TOTAL taxable income for 2021. That includes interest, taxable portion of 401k disbursements, selling a hog at the county fair or more realistically selling a car or tools or home furnishing. its all income.

Income for O’care is defined by IRS rules. So taxable portion of a home sale, or capital gains on stock or selling canned fruit at a roadside stand is all income.

Lets say he gets employed next year.

Ocare doesn’t consider a pay period, they consider the total year’s income. If he thought he would get a job he could questimate what that pay would be and when he would start employment. For instance if he thinks he will get a job in March that pays $1500 a month , that 1500 x 10 = $15,000 income for 2021. Ocare gives you some months, up to 8 months for some people i know, to prove income. so if he thinks he will get a job in June for $4000 a month that’s $24,000 and he would get a nice subsidy.

IMPORTANT: as an individual he needs to make around $16000/year. , depending on the state, to get subsidies . At around $16,00o he would get nearly 100% premium subsidy. again depending on state if he make less than that he would be elgiible for Medicaid Expansion. i say it depends on the state because here in Texas we don’t have teh Medicaid subsidy. If you make $16,500 you get a 100% premium subsidy. if you make $15,999. you get NO health insurance whatsoever.

you can fiddle with the figure on income qualifications at https://www.healthcare.gov/

it walks you through family income and such, who’s currently insured, etc. I am not quite sure how having access to your HI would effect O;care subsidies. if at all.
stick a reasonable number in there, apply, pick a plan, enroll They will start asking you to prove income in February or March. If you enroll and you don’t earn any income then that money IRS paid towards your premiums would be money you would owe the IRS.

so the key to affordable HC thru the O’care exchange is to to have income of around $165000 in 2021.

my plan has zero dollars deductible and $2700 out of pocket maximum which means co-pays basically . once you hit $2700 you don’t pay another dime. Plans very by state. An awful lot of medicine is totally free.

                          tonite is deadline,

enroll. if you change your mind you can. but don’t miss tonites deadline.

i have Ambetter, my course of immo, finished last week cost insurer $350,000. or more. they didn’t balk.

Adding your husband to your plan – sounds like a good plan! Insurance sucks no matter how you get it, but it’s pretty important for everyone and esp for us melanoma peeps. Sorry for what you and your husband are going through. I hope he finds a new gig quickly. celeste
