Does everyone on Z use sunscreen of SPF 30 ( or higher) on all exposed areas even in the winter? What about on rainy days?
THanks,

My husband has been on Z for 14 months. In the winter he still does lip balm every day and if we’re out much in the sun, he uses sunscreen on his face and neck. During the spring, summer and fall, he still needs sunscreen on all exposed skin (even on rainy/cloudy days). -

My photosensitivity deminished after I was on Z for a while… but While I was still very sensitive, I got burned on my face pretty good on an overcast day. The rays still get through, you notice them so much less because of the cool shadiness of the day. I really liked the baby sunscreen for my face, it is high SPF, broad spectrum and natural ingredients.

Karen – congrats! Don’t let the side effects scare you, they do get better and loads of people on here have good advice for managing. Clothing is your best option – no need to reapply! Don’t forget your head, ears & lips. I had the best luck last summer with 75+ very sensitive skin sunscreen (couldn’t wear makeup on top either, maybe just me, but seemed it didn’t works as well). I could burn in the shade or in the car. Still I blistered a couple of times on my ears, nose, and lips. No lasting damage. Ya gotta live it while you’re here! My doc said absolutely no days on the boat/beach. ๐ He’d seen 4th degree burns from the sun+reflection of the water. I wouldn’t be having Christmas with my husband and kids without Zel.Amy

My husband uses atleast 25 spf during the cooler weather, rainy, etc and has not been burned at all. During the summer months he has to wear atleast 50, cover up if doing outside work, and does the work before or after peak sun. The last burn he got was after cutting the grass, 2 small triangles where his wrists stuck out from the gloves. He found out the hard way how to work with the sun after a few crazy burns….. HORRIBLE blisters on his shins, a burn on his forearm thru the truck tinted window (he then got limo tint and has a doctors note in his glove box in case he gets pulled over), and the worst was his face swelled up so bad he could not see! Poor guy. He has been on Z for 7 mos, minimal side effects and sun sensitivity has diminished, but still cautious.
Hang in there!!!! Tis the season of miracles! Kelly

Hi, Karen. I think everyone finds out the hard way. When I first started zel my wife and I went to an outdoor pool but sat under a shade canopy near the deep end of the pool. I did not use lotion but kept my shirt on as I walked to the shallow end, swam one lap and walked back. I wound up with severe burns on my head, face, legs and feet. I also got burned again on a very cloudy day while doing a 5 kilometer benefit walk. Now I don't go out at all without sunscreen. A few notes on new laws regarding sunscreens:
They are no longer allowed to use the terms "sweat proof" or "water proof" Its suggested that all sunscreens be re-applied verey 2 hours no matter what
You'll need something labeled "broad spectrum" which means it protects from both UVA a and UVB
Only SPFs of 15 or higher are allowed to advertise that they can lower the risk of skin cancer
I've been OK with SPF 30 along with a separate lip balm of 30 or more but I still avoid direct sunlight if at all possible
Sunscreen should be applied at least 15-20 minutes before going outside and should be rubbed well into the skin.
I live i NY, as you do so right now I seem to be having less sun issues due to both the weakened sun rays this time of year and maybe the fact that I've been on ZEL for 5 months and the side effects may be weakening.
Best of luck to you!
