My family member was just diagnosed with Melanoma of unknown origin (axial tumor). He will be having PET and MRI this friday and surgery next Tuesday for complete lymphnode dissection. They stage him at III prior to PET. They are suggesting Ipilimumab and Interferon.
Is anyone familiar with the Marshfiled group of oncology physicians and surgeons? If so, is he in good hands? Should they seek trials before going down the Ipil or IF road?
Thank you for any input, this board is invaluable.

I think most would suggest a National Cancer Institute approved comprehensive cancer center or other center of excellence for melanoma – to see a melanoma specialist for the best treatment. Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana. . not sure which would be closest to northern Wisconsin:

I go to the UW Carbone Cancer Center as I live in South Central wisconsin. Doctor Mark Albertini is very easy to deal with and is highly regarded in his field. He has lots of compassion for patients. The Carbone Cancer Center also shares information with the Mayo clinic. They asked for a second opinion from Mayo before I did Interferon.
I believe Yoopergirl goes to the Marshfield clinic, with some consultation with the Carbone Cancer Center. She may be able to tell you more about them.
Lastly IPI versus interferon. I never did IPI, but I did do interferon. It was rough but I am glad I did it. I knew ahead of time of its limited effectiveness, but felt a need to try something to prevent the cancer from coming back.
Thanks,
MikeWI
