Thank you to everyone that responded to my post last night – we are dazed with the news and reading that everyone is still fighting and ALIVE is a relief.  Our oncologist is the Director of Cancer hospital at Scripps Green Hospital in San Diego……but we didn't ask if he is a melanoma specialist, we wil.

Does anyone have a San Diego referral for a Melanoma Specialist?

I have a recommendation in Los Angeles.  Dr. Mike Wong at USC Los Angeles.  He is an unbelievable oncologist and has a terrific personality.  He also has a unbelievable team is this spreads to the brain, which is a lot of cases melanoma does. The specialists at USC are just excellent and I love the fact that this is a teaching hospital because there are more eyes on every MRI or CT scan my Mom has when she has her appointments with her radiologist (Dr. Eric Chang) and neurooncologist (Dr. Naveed Wagle).

On another note, I always recommend a 2nd or even 3rd opinion. The reason is because when my Mom was first diagnosed the radiologist missed 3 brain tumors and the first gamma knife specialist that preformed surgery said one "tumor" was a blood vessel. In the 1 month followup a radiologist said it was a tumor and he nixed that diagnose from her MRI.  4 months later that tumor was gamma knifed along with 16 others.

In my opinion you always need to have someone look at the reports and view the MRI or CT scans you have.  It really pays to get a 2nd or 3rd opinion to have them check others work and just to hear about treatment plans and to find out about possible trials that may be good to try…

I want to be clear that Dr. Eric Chang and Dr. Naveed Wagle at USC were the 2nd team we worked with. (My Mom had 17 new tumors treated after the 1st radiologist preformed gamma knife. He missed the active brain cancer tumor.) The first round of gamma knife and the radiologist who preformed it, as well at the neruoongologist who was involved in her after care, I am not a fan of. – There were located at a facility in Beverly Hills, CA.

The doctors at USC have just been been awesome.

                              Best of luck.

My husband was treated by Dr. Ed McClay in Vista.  Great melanoma specialist.  We received opinions from Georgetown, Sloan Memorial, Los Angeles Clinic and few others.  We picked Dr. McClay–went with our gut.  l am from San Diego, but live on the East Coat.
