hello – I had scalp surgery for very thick melonoma in May. Unfortunately back in 2 nodes behind my right ear and the amazing folks at Moffitt will be doing full node disection on Oct 24. I've been told about 1 night in ICU, a drain for a week and a pretty scar. I'm pretty calm currently, more concerned [because of the pain] about my recent total tear of ACL and partial meniscus surgery that is also needed… but that aside… any suggestions/comments greatly appreciated.

Hi Todd
I am sure others that have been through this can give you more advice, but my son also had a full node disection on one side of his neck. For him, revcovery was fairly easy…it took a while to get full range of motion ( turning head) but eventually back to normal. Even the pretty scar has faded pretty well.
Best of luck to you

Hi Todd, I had complete Rt. neck node dissection in May . For me, the surgery was tougher than I had expected. I have nerve damage resulting in shoulder dysfunction, was off work for 8 weeks, and just got discharged from PT. I'm slowly improving and hope that I will continue to.
I am sure that Moffit will take great care of you, and in my case the nerve damage was unavoidable. I look at it as the cost of getting the nodes out. I did have 3 more positive nodes in there so good riddance. Just make sure you are hooked up with PT right away after surgery as frozen shoulder is one possible outcome if you aren't dilligent. That and take care to get on senna or something for your bowels as any major surgery slows everything down.
I was lucky in that my drains were pulled before I went home so I didn't have to deal with that at home.
Just curious- is the ACL on the same side as the dissection or opposite? PT might be affected by the tear, just something to think about.
Best of everything to you- keep us informed.
