I was just wondering if any of you took any natural supplements after being diagnosed with melanoma.  Since my dad was diagnosed we have been  flooded with people suggesting natural teas and supplements that help fight cancer and some that help deal with depression.  He has started taking some and I'm afraid we might be hurting him more than helping.

Your dad needs to be careful with that. I strongly suggest he do some research before he gets any further.

Apparently I can't post a link to Memorial Sloan Kettering without triggering the spam filter. angry

Google "integrative medicine memorial sloan kettering". They have an excellent page on herbs and other supplements that cancer patients are taking.

Sorry for my abrupt response. I was getting pretty aggravated with my post triggering the spam filter. The supplements he's taking can have side effects and may not play nicely with each other or with any medication he's taking. So he definitely can be doing himself more harm than good by blindly following the advice of well meaning friends. But if he insists on taking them, then he's got to do some homework. smiley

Since I am on a trial I got to speak to a pharmacist who reviewed the supplements I was taking. She said the big no-no are mushrooms. Other stuff I was on included fish oil, turmeric, green tea extract, Vitamin D. She asked me not to take any of the other supplements except for the D because they don’t want to confuse the evaluation of my response to the trial drugs with a response to the supplements.

If you have access to an oncology pharmacist that person can review supplements and their effects on your medications. IMHO, pharmacists are some of the most under utilized health professionals!
