Hi. My name is Gail. I am a 55-year-old female. I was diagnosed with melanoma in 2017. The surgery was successful with no treatments. I have just been diagnosed with it again. I need to know what can I eat or drink before my PET Scan? I am hypoglycemic and need to make sure I keep my sugar up the day of the scan. Thank you for anyone who is willing to reply.

Hi, I’m sure your doctors will provide you with instruction before the scan. Here is MSK provided me prior to a PET scan. I hope the cut and paste works.Instructions for eating and drinking before your procedure
Do not eat anything after midnight the night before your surgery. This includes hard candy and gum.
Between midnight and up until 2 hours before your scheduled arrival time, you may drink a total of 12 ounces of water (see figure).
Starting 2 hours before your scheduled arrival time, do not eat or drink anything. This includes water.Hope that helps

Since you are hypoglycemic, you need to ask your doctor how to prepare for your PET scan. The usual preparations for a PET scan reduce the patient’s blood sugar. For my PET scans I am to drink only water and eat nothing in the 4 hours before I arrive at the testing center. The morning of my PET scan before that 4 hours I can eat protein and fat ( eggs, meat ), but no carbohydrate food ( no cereal, bread, sugar, fruit, juice ). The day before a PET scan I am to drink extra water, not to exercise and to eat a high protein low carbohydrate supper.
