Hi there, I had a WLE three months ago on my back for a melanoma .3mm – now three months later I feel like this scar is itchy and a light dark spot is appearing in the same spot as the melanoma, what else could this be but the melanoma reappearing – what should I do? My husband thinks this scar looks fine. I am trying not to panic as I have three small children at home including a newborn who is two months old 🙁 – my days are busy and my derm is an hour and a half away!

Hi Joanie-do you keep your scar moist? It is still very fresh and will go throu phases of healing. If it is really dry, moisturise it with cream or oil and see if it improves over the next day or two. Also, can you look at it, moisturised (not dry) in full sun? If so, check to see if it is actually repigmenting in that kind of light, not weak bathroom light etc. I'm only saying this as I went for a second opinion a few months after a wle, and my scar looked really funky, and was itchy. The Derm checked it and advised proper wound care (even though wle had healed/stitches removed). Without moisturising, my scar actually dried out and looked mottled and was itchy. He assured me it was dryness and sure enough the appearance normalised with better wound care. If it doesn't improve over the next day or two, or if you are absolutely sure its repigmenting, get straight to your doc, don't wait.

You may also have an internal stitch coming out. In addition, if you have freckles nearby, they can grow through the scar (been there, done that). So basically, anything untoward in your scar should be checked out, but there are plenty of benign reasons for scar changes – especially early on. They took out a big divot of skin and it is still healing!

Joanie – TAKE PICTURES with a good camera. Your mind will play tricks with you…but a good picture won't lie and can be a very helpful diagnostic tool.
And it takes zero $$ and very little time. Put them on a USB drive and bring them with you to your doctors appointments.
