My BRAF results came in and I am negative so yervoy is next in line for my very very advanced melanoma. Prior to that though, they need to radiate 5-6 brain mets via SRS. They are suggesting that we do both at the same time to see if yervoy results are a little better. Anyone heard of this? Any thoughts? Thanks

Google "abscopal effect". Sometimes blasting tumors causes your immune system to go "hey, what's all this stuff floating around?" and it will start attacking the cancer.
It's rare, but there's been a few studies that have shown that IPI potentiates this even further. This is probably what your docs are aiming for.

Hi,
If you go to the Memorial Sloan Kettering web site and look up Dr Jed Wolchuk you will find a paper he wrote outlining the abscopal effect. I was given Yervoy and had simultaneous SRS radiation treatment on a temporal lobe tumor in Q1 2012. My scans since have sown no recurrence in that location. I did have one small tumor develop between the brain Derma ( sack around the brain) and the skull which was treated with SRS alone but still monitoring to ensure it's gone. Away from that I have had no other tumors develop. I found both Yervoy and the SRS very tolerable. Good luck with your treatment.

My experience is a little different than what you describe, sequential vs. simultaneous. Almost 2 years ago, I had a craniotomy for a single 2.5-cm met, followed a month later by a single fraction of SRS (CyberKnife) to the tumor bed, then started a standard four-dose course of Yervoy a month after that. I'm dealing with complications from delayed onset (15 months later) radiation necrosis from the CyberKnife at the tumor site, but to the best of our knowledge, haven't had a tumor recurrence there or elsewhere.

My Mom had gamma knife treatment 4 days before starting Yervoy and she's done very very well. She was diagnosed at stage IV and had 25 brain mets in total treated.
In August we were told that is is very very likely that she'll never need other treatment. That is how well she's responded to Yervoy.
Good luck and talk to your doctor about the timing of gamma knife and treatment. Maybe its better to have gamma knife first followed by Yervoy in a few days or some other combination.
