My father in law recently had his spleen and piece of his lung removed. He was put on Zelboraf as an experiment to prevent the melanoma from coming back. We live near the water and we are constantly out doors. With summer approaching, we are finding it very difficult for him to be out doors. Does anyone have any suggestions while on this drug to help with protection from the sun. He has become so sensitive that he is afraid to go out doors. Anyone find a good sun block that might work better than others? Or any suggestions at all would be grateful.Thank you

Hi my dad is on this drug and he is very careful after a few bad burns from the sun. You can go outside but you must wear clothing that when you hold up to light, you can't see through. A broad rimmed hat and sunscreen. Im Australia so Im not sure what products you have over there. As long as he is covered up and has applied sunscreen before going outside he should be fine. My dad was on the roof fixing a hole for 1hr. He had a hat sunscreen and long sleeved clothing and it was very sunny. The only place he didn't apply sunscreen was on his lips. The only place he got burnt….was on hip lips. I would just make sure the sunscreen is a skin sensitive high factor one.
Take care

At the risk of sounding like I'm in advertising, here is what I use for being out in the sun.
First thing I use is a wide brim hat, not a ball cap, but one where the brim is quite large and goes completely around the head; my favorite is a Tilley. Second, I wear sun protective shirts. LL Bean sells some that are comefortable and light weight. I wear regular weight pants that are normally heavy enough to block the sun and I stay away from sandals. Third, sunscreen – Neutrogena has both a spray and a cream that do not have what I would describe as a heavy sunscreen smell; I use them both on different parts of my body. Lastly, don't forget the lips. Chapstick has one with some SPF protection.
During my first summer on Zelboraf I felt myself getting burned while driving since I never wanted to put on sunscreen if I was just going someplace. Last summer I went and had the side windows on my truck tinted and that made a big difference.
I'm retired and love to garden but I force myself to work outside early and late in the day avoiding the 10:00 – 3:00 periods.
Hope this helps and good luck to your father.
