I would ask that the surgery be closed up by a plastic surgeon. I had 3 scalp/neck surgeries in 2010. One on the initial site, the second a neck dissection, and the third a surgery to remove in-transit metastasis. I have a few lines on my head where the different surgeries took place but did not have to deal with the healing of a donor site. Probably would not even notice if I didn't cut my hair so short! Best of luck to you. Alan

Lisa,
Sorry to hear about the 2 new brain mets. You are fortunate that your immune system was able to dispose of the first two so quickly! I sincerely hope it will do the same with the new ones. I have had one brain met which was treated by Gamma Knife 5/11. MRIs since then have shown no new mets and the one that was treated is stable. The treatments we undergo CAN but the brakes on this disease. You have such a great attitude, and it is evident that you do refuse to quit. Best of luck with the new GK treatment and the ipi booster.

I had a gamma knife procedure in May. They do attach a halo to the head with four pointy screws. The area is treated prior with novacaine or something similar so I did not really feel it at the time. Afterwards the points of attachment were sore and numb for several days if not weeks, but at this point cannot notice anything. The biggest issue I had was the steroid given to reduce swelling, decedron, really made it impossible to sleep. Other than that no real issues. At the six month followup my met had shrunk by 2mm. Have another MRI planned for mid November and hoping for more of the same!Best of luck with the procedure

Karin,
I hope you are doing well. I updated my profile with the latest details but in a nutshell….no evidence of disease since the one brain met. I was only able to handle two infusions of the yervoy due to colitis, but two scans since the Yervoy have shown no disease and that the brain met (now assumed dead due to Gamma Knife) is shrinking!
No further treatments planned but will be spending the month of July in India with my Ayurvedic doctor for an immune boost.

Sharon,
I was IIIc (with in-transit mets) and about a year later found a brain met. So yes, I would recommend the occasional brain MRI. My docs did one when the primary was found and were not planning to do another. I asked for the MRI due to ringing in my ears and they found the met.
