Hey guys. Thank you all so much for your advice and reassurances. I survived the JP drain, & it was removed a little over a week ago without major problems. What a relief that's over!

Hi Michael. I am stage 3a, and I will be starting my course of interferon-a this Monday, so it sounds like we are in very similar situations. (Before anyone on this post yells at me about my decision; I am being treated at a world renowned cancer hospital with melanoma specialists, and this course of treatment was recommended.) If you decide to do the treatment, and you uncover a good technique for dealing with the side effects of the treatment, please pass the the information along. I will certainly be happy to do the same. I also have a job that has long hours and is extremely physically demanding, so any survival strategies would be appreciated. Best of luck to you in your decision, and treatment (if that is your choice).

Hi Leslie and Husband! I had my JP drain removed just over a week ago, and the whole process of dealing with the drain was not the most pleasant experience, that's for sure. I was able to reach most of the drain, and I stripped it several times per day. My husband would strip the entire length at least twice per day. Even so, I had some of those "pink ribbons" for the majority of the time. Fluid was still draining at a good rate, so my doctor was not concerned. When they removed the drain, they found that there was a clot, which led to a small amount of fluid backup in the tissue. This drained out of the opening within a day or two, and I am now healing with no complications. My most important advice for your wife is to do the exercises her physical therapist showed her,to maintain her range of motion in her arm. It can help prevent or minimize axillary web syndrome.

Yes, they showed me. I try to strip all the tubing I can reach every few hours, and my husband strips the entire tube 2-3 times per day. Still having trouble with the leakage. Trying to get through to my doctor…Also, did it hurt terribly when the drain was removed?
